How Community Development Block Grants Can Improve Your Neighborhood
Do you know what happens to areas where there’s an economic decline? One bleak scenario is that without money, it starts to become dilapidated and possibly crime-ridden, so that just accelerates the pace of businesses and residents leaving the area. Revenues decline further because of the shrinking tax base, and the downward spiral continues. One way to prevent this is with an infusion of outside funding. One way a town or neighborhood can get a boost is with money from the federal government. One of the longest-running and most successful federal grant programs is the Community Development Block Grant. Here’s how it works. A sum of money in the form of a federal grant is provided
Community Development Block Grant
This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Community Development Block Grant Program. The Community Development Block Grant program was enacted into law as part of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1974. The Community Development Block Grant Program’s main purpose is to provide decent, safe and sanitary housing, a suitable living environment, and economic opportunities to low- and moderate-income people. To this day, the Community Development Block Grant Program remains the principal source of revenue for localities to utilize in devising flexible solutions to prevent physical, economic, and social deterioration in lower-income neighborhoods and communities throughout the nation.
Should You Include Politics in Your Government Grant Proposals?
I get a lot of questions about government grant proposals, and I’ve reviewed a fair number of them. I’ve seen some instances where people want to make a grand political statement as part of their government grant request or making the basis of their funding request kind of a pushback against some public policy that they don’t agree with.
Community Energy Co-op Uses Government Grant to Help Neighbourhood
COMMUNITY groups have benefited from a £13,000 cash windfall that was generated by renewable energy installations. Low Carbon Ladock is a local community energy co-operative set up to help reduce locals’ electricity bills. They use renewable energy sources that generate power, which is fed into the National Grid. They got their start with seed money from a government grant.

14-year-old Boy Wins Fire Truck Grant
Joshua Chilcote in many ways is just your typical 14-year-old teenager. He attends high school where he runs track and plays soccer. He also listens to his iPod, talks on his cell phone, and plays video games just like every other kid his age. But unlike most of his peers, Joshua has accomplished something quite extraordinary: winning an Assistance to Firefighters Grant for a brand new fire engine.
Government Grants to Help Reduce Danger to Pedestrians
It’s been getting more dangerous to walk in the United States, but government grants may help ease the situation.
In 2012, the last year for which complete data are available, 4,743 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes. That total represented 14% of all traffic deaths that year; a decade earlier, pedestrian deaths had been 11% of all road fatalities. The 2012 total was a 6% increase over the previous year.
You Can Influence Where Your Government’s Money Goes
Each of us is just one person, and sometimes we can feel powerless against giant institutions, especially bodies of government. After all, they’re notorious for being bureaucratic and staffed by uncaring workers who take pleasure in thwarting citizens, right? The politicians are no better, promising everything to get elected, then forgetting about us little people once they’re in.
Trust, but Verify
Most of us want to live in the kind of world where other people have the same good character traits as we do. We expect honesty, mutual respect, and ethics. There are lots of people who live up to these standards, but some who will fall short. Especially in business and real estate dealings, it’s smart to have cordial, professional working relationships, but to also protect your own interests at the same time.

Grants to Improve Health in Under-served Communities
How do you help make a healthy community even healthier?
Recent research from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation suggests that sometimes our zip code can have a bigger impact on our health than our genetic code.
In other words, much of what influences our health happens outside the doctor’s office, in our communities. Community factors, such as safety, access to healthy foods and recreational spaces, and the support of families and social networks, undeniably contribute to our health. Where we are born and raised, plus where we live and work, matter to our health. Yet too many kids are growing up in communities that put barriers to good health in front of them.

Government Grants for Disconnected Youth
A community issue that is common throughout many countries is the problem of disconnected youth. What “disconnected” means in this sense, is a sense of alienation from the family or community, or both. This creates challenges for the youth, the family, schools, neighborhoods, law enforcement, and more. It’s an important issue, which is why government grant money is
